He belonged to the Jews of Medina, though it was also said that he was from the Ansar. He was a child when the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him—arrived in Medina.
Ibn Kathīr stated that he embraced Islam and that his son, ʿUmāra, was one of the leading Successors. Imam Mālik and others narrated from him (1).
Al-Dhahabī included a biographical entry on him in his book Tajrīd Asmāʾ al-Sahāba, stating: “ʿAbd Allah ibn Sayyād. Ibn Shāhīn (2) included him and said: He is Ibn Sā’id. His father was Jewish, and ʿAbd Allah was born one-eyed and circumcised. He is the one who was said to be the Dajjal. He later embraced Islam; thus, he was a Successor who had seen the Prophet” (3).
Al-Hāfiz Ibn Hajar also included a biographical entry on him in Al-Isāba. After citing al-Dhahabī’s words, he said: “Among his descendants was ʿUmāra ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Sayyād, who was one of the finest Muslims and one of the companions of Saʿīd ibn al-Musayyib. Mālik and others narrated from him.”
