Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil

a thick pterygium (1). Written between his eyes are the separate letters (k f r), or the unseparated word kāfir (“unbeliever”). Every Muslim will be able to read it, whether literate or illiterate. Another of his characteristics is that he is sterile and will have no children.

The following are some of the authentic hadiths that mention the foregoing characteristics. They also constitute evidence that the Dajjal will appear:

  1. Ibn Umar—may Allah be pleased with him and his father—reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “While I was asleep, I was circumambulating the House … (He then related that he saw Jesus, son of Mary, peace be upon him; thereafter, he saw the Dajjal and described him, saying:) There stood a large, ruddy man with curly hair, blind in one eye, whose eye resembled a shriveled grape. They said, ‘This is the Dajjal. The man who most closely resembles him is Ibn Qatan (2),’” a man from Khuzā‘a (3).
(1) *Zafara* (pterygium): pronounced with an a-vowel on the *zā’* and *fā’*. It is a fleshy growth that develops at the inner corner of the eye and may extend over its dark part and cover it. See *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth*, 3:158. The *ma’āqī* refers to the front part of the eye. See *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth*, 4:289. (2) Ibn Qatan’s full name was *Abd al-Uzzā ibn Qatan ibn Amr al-Khuzā‘ī. It is also said that he belonged to the Banū al-Mustaliq of Khuzā‘a. His mother was Hāla bint Khuwaylid. He was not a Companion, since he died during the pre-Islamic period. The report that he asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), “Will it harm me that I resemble him?” and that he replied, “No. You are a Muslim, whereas he is an unbeliever,” is a weak addition in Ahmad’s narration through al-Mas‘ūdī, who confused it with another hadith. See Ahmad Shākir’s notes on *Musnad Ahmad*, 15:30–31; *al-Isāba fī Tamyīz al-Sahāba*, 4:239; and *Fath al-Bārī*, 6:488 and 13:101. (3) *Sahīh al-Bukhārī*, Book of Tribulations, chapter “The Dajjal Is Mentioned,” 13:90 (with *Fath al-Bārī*); and *Sahīh Muslim*, Book of Faith, chapter “The Messiah, Son of Mary (peace be upon him), and the False Messiah, the Dajjal,” 2:237 (with al-Nawawī’s commentary).
