(meaning: years).” (1).
2 - He, may Allah be pleased with him, also reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “I give you glad tidings of the Mahdi. He will be sent forth amid divisions among the people and earthquakes. He will fill the earth with equity and justice just as it had been filled with tyranny and oppression. The angels in heaven and the inhabitants of the earth will be pleased with him, and he will distribute wealth equitably.” A man asked him, “What does ‘equitably’ mean?” He replied, “Fairly among the people.”
He said: “Allah will fill the hearts of Muhammad’s ummah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, with contentment, and his justice will encompass them all. He will order a herald to proclaim, ‘Who is in need of wealth?’ No one among the people will rise except one man. He will be told, ‘Go to the saddān (meaning the treasurer) and tell him: “The Mahdi commands you to give me some wealth.”’ The treasurer will tell him, ‘Scoop it up.’ Once he has gathered it into his lap and carried it out, he will regret it and say, ‘I was the most covetous person in Muhammad’s ummah! Was what sufficed them not enough for me?’” He said: “He will return it, but it will not be accepted from him. He will be told, ‘We do not take back anything we have given.’ He will remain thus for seven, eight, or nine years. Then there will be no good in living after him”; or he said: “Then there will be no good in life after him.” (2).
