Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil
  • Evidence from the Sunnah for His Appearance:

Authentic hadiths have been reported indicating the appearance of the Mahdi. Some of these explicitly mention the Mahdi, while others mention only his characteristics (1). I shall cite some of these hadiths here, and they are sufficient to establish that his appearance at the end of time is one of the signs of the Hour.

1 - Abū Saʿīd al-Khudrī, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said: “The Mahdi will emerge near the end of my ummah. Allah will send rain for him, the earth will bring forth its vegetation, wealth will be distributed equally, livestock will multiply, and the ummah will grow large. He will live for seven or eight

(1) In his master’s thesis, *The Hadiths Concerning the Mahdi Weighed According to al-Jarh wa-al-Taʿdīl (Narrator Criticism and Accreditation)*, Shaykh Abd al-Alīm Abd al-Azīm comprehensively examined the hadiths concerning the Mahdi. He identified the imams who recorded them, cited the scholars’ assessments of each hadith’s chain of transmission and their rulings upon it, and then stated the conclusions he had reached. Anyone seeking a more extensive treatment should consult this thesis, for it is the most comprehensive reference on the hadiths concerning the Mahdi, as Shaykh Abd al-Muhsin al-Abbād stated in the *Journal of the Islamic University*, issue 45, p. 323. The thesis contains a total of 336 narrations, comprising hadiths attributed to the Prophet as well as reports from the Companions and others. Of these, thirty-two hadiths and eleven reports are either authentic or sound. Nine of the hadiths and six of the reports explicitly mention the Mahdi, while the remainder contain descriptions and indications showing that they concern him. Many hadith authorities authenticated the hadiths concerning the Mahdi. Among them were Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyya in *Minhāj al-Sunna fī Naqd Kalām al-Shīʿa wa-al-Qadariyya*, 4:211; the eminent scholar Ibn al-Qayyim in *al-Manār al-Munīf fī al-Sahīh wa-al-Daʿīf*, p. 142 ff., edited by Shaykh Abd al-Fattāh Abū Ghudda; and the hadith master Ibn Kathīr in *al-Nihāya: al-Fitan wa-al-Malāhim*, 1:24–32, edited by Dr. Tāhā Zaynī. Other scholars also authenticated them, as will be mentioned below.
