over spoils of war.” He then gestured with his hand in this manner, pointing it toward Syria, and said, “An enemy will muster against the Muslims, and the Muslims will muster against them.” I asked, “Do you mean the Romans?” He replied, “Yes. At that time, there will be a fierce onslaught in the battle. The Muslims will designate a vanguard (1) sworn to fight to the death and not return unless victorious. They will fight until night intervenes between them. Both sides will then withdraw without either gaining victory, and the vanguard will be annihilated.
“The Muslims will again designate a vanguard sworn to fight to the death and not return unless victorious. They will fight until night intervenes between them. Both sides will then withdraw without either gaining victory, and the vanguard will be annihilated.
“The Muslims will then designate a third vanguard sworn to fight to the death and not return unless victorious. They will fight until evening. Both sides will then withdraw without either gaining victory, and the vanguard will be annihilated.
“On the fourth day, the remaining Muslims will advance (2) against them, and Allah will bring defeat upon the enemy (3). A slaughter will then ensue—either he said that its like would never be seen, or that its like had never been seen. Even a bird passing by their flanks will not get beyond them before falling dead. The sons of a single father, who had numbered one hundred, will count one another and find that only one man remains among them. Over what spoils of war could they rejoice, and what inheritance could they divide?
“While they are in that state, they will hear of a danger even greater than this. An alarm will reach them that the Dajjāl has appeared among the families they left behind. They will abandon what is in their hands and set out, sending ten horsemen ahead as scouts.”
