brothers in public but enemies in private. Yet you are not such people, nor is this that time. That will be a time when desire and fear become manifest, and some people will seek the favor of others to secure their worldly interests” (1).

46—The Land of Arabia Returning to Meadows and Rivers:

Another sign is that the land of Arabia will return to being meadows and rivers. Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “The Hour will not come until the land of Arabia returns to being meadows (2) and rivers” (3).

This hadith indicates that the land of Arabia was once meadows and rivers and that it will return to being as it once was—meadows and rivers.

(1) Al-Tuwayjirī said: “Al-Tabarānī narrated it. Al-Haythamī said: ‘Its narrators are trustworthy as far as this sahīfa (written document).’” *Ithāf al-Jamā‘ah* (1/504). I searched for it in the sections of *Majma al-Zawā’id* where it would be expected to appear, but I did not find this wording. I did, however, find a hadith narrated from Muādh ibn Jabal, who reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “Toward the end of time, there will be people who are brothers in public but enemies in private.” Muādh asked, “Messenger of Allah, how will that be?” He replied: “Because of the hopes they place in one another and the fear they have of one another.” Al-Haythamī said: “Al-Bazzār narrated it, as did al-Tabarānī in *al-Awsat*. Its chain includes Abū Bakr ibn Abī Maryam, who is weak.” *Majma al-Zawā’id* (7/286). (2) *Al-murūj* is the plural of *marj*, meaning a broad open tract. Land covered with herbage is also called a *marj*. Hence the expression *maraja al-dābbata yamrujuhā*, meaning that one lets an animal loose to graze in a meadow. See *Lisān al-Arab* (2/364).
