Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil

large saddles (1) until they reach the doors of their mosques; their women will be clothed yet naked.”

Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (may Allah bless him and grant him peace) said: “There are two types of the people of the Fire whom I have not seen: people carrying whips like cattle’s tails, with which they beat others; and women who are clothed yet naked, inclining and causing others to incline (2), their heads resembling the tilted humps of Bactrian camels (3). They will neither enter Paradise nor smell its fragrance, although its fragrance can be perceived

Abū Hātim also said: “He is comparable to Ibn Lahīa.” I say: The other hadiths corroborate and strengthen it. (1) *Al-mayāthir* is the plural of *mīthara*—with the initial *m* vowelled *i*. It is a cloth draped over other garments and lying above them. The word is derived from *wathura, wathāra*, hence *wathīr*, meaning distinctly soft. *Mayāthir* also denotes saddle furnishings used by non-Arabs and made of silk or brocade. What is meant here is large saddles. See *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth* (5/150–151), *Lisān al-Arab* (5/278–279), and *Tartīb al-Qāmūs* (4/572). (2) “Causing others to incline and themselves inclining” has four possible interpretations: a. They incline by straying from obedience to Allah Most High and from their obligations, such as guarding their chastity; they cause others to incline by teaching other women to behave likewise. b. They incline by strutting in their gait and cause their shoulders to incline. c. They incline by wearing their hair in the *maylā* style, a hairstyle associated with prostitutes; they cause others to incline by styling other women’s hair in the same manner. d. They incline toward men and cause men to incline toward them by displaying their adornment and the like. See *Sharh al-Nawawī li-Muslim* (17/191). (3) “Their heads resembling the humps of Bactrian camels” means that they enlarge their heads by gathering their hair and wrapping it atop them until it tilts toward one side of the head, just as camels’ humps lean to one side. See *Sharh al-Nawawī li-Muslim* (17/191).
