drawn near and that there is no refuge from Allah except with Him.
Those among the sinful who use musical instruments and those who drink wine have been threatened with being swallowed by the earth, transformed, and pelted with stones.
Al-Tirmidhī narrated from Imrān ibn Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “There will be people in this community who are swallowed by the earth, transformed, and pelted with stones.” A Muslim man asked, “O Messenger of Allah, when will that occur?” He replied: “When singing slave-girls and musical instruments become prevalent and wine is drunk” (1).
Ibn Mājah narrated from Abū Mālik al-Asharī (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Some people from my community will certainly drink wine, calling it by another name. Musical instruments will be played over their heads; Allah will cause the earth to swallow them and will turn some of them into apes and swine” (2).
Transformation may be literal or figurative.
The hadith master Ibn Kathīr (may Allah have mercy on him) interpreted “transformation” in the words of Allah Almighty, “And you had already known about those among you who transgressed concerning the Sabbath, so We said to them, ‘Be apes, despised!’” [al-Baqara: 65], as a literal transformation, not merely a figurative one. This is the preponderant view, and it was held by Ibn Abbās and other leading Quran commentators.
