This has indeed come to pass: trade has proliferated, women have participated in it, and people have become engrossed in amassing wealth and competing for it.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) informed us that it was not poverty he feared for this nation. Rather, he feared that worldly prosperity would be lavished upon them, causing them to compete with one another. In the hadith, he said: “By Allah, it is not poverty that I fear for you. Rather, I fear that worldly prosperity will be lavished upon you just as it was lavished upon those before you, so that you will vie for it as they did, and it will destroy you as it destroyed them” (1).
Agreed upon.
In Muslim’s narration: “And it will distract you as it distracted them” (2).
He (peace and blessings be upon him) also said: “When Persia and Rome are conquered for you, what sort of people will you be?” Abd al-Rahmān ibn Awf replied, “We shall conduct ourselves as Allah has commanded us.” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Or will it be otherwise? You will compete with one another, then envy one another, then turn your backs on one another, and then hate one another”—or words to that effect (3).
Competition for worldly gain thus leads to weakness in religion, the destruction of the nation, and the loss of its unity, just as occurred in the past and is occurring now.
