shaving the hair is not forbidden.” (1)
I say: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade dyeing the hair of the head and beard black. It is related in the Sahih from Jābir ibn Abd Allāh (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: “Abū Quhāfah was brought in on the day of the conquest of Mecca, with his hair and beard as white as the intensely white thaghāmah plant (2). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Change this with something, but avoid black.’” (3)
(1) Ibn al-Jawzī, *al-Mawdūāt* (3/55).
Ibn al-Jawzī said: “Know that a number of the Companions and Successors dyed their hair black, including al-Hasan, al-Husayn, and Sad ibn Abī Waqqās, as did many of the Successors. Some scholars disliked it only because it involved deception. As for holding that, in the absence of deception, it rises to the level of prohibition and thus incurs this threat—no one has maintained such a view.” *Al-Mawdūāt* (3/55).
Al-Nawawī said: “Dyeing the hair black is prohibited according to the sounder view. It is also said to be disliked in a non-prohibitive sense (*karāhat tanzīh*), but the preferred view is prohibition, based on the Prophet’s words: ‘Avoid black.’” *Sharh Muslim* (14/80).
Ibn Abī Āsim related in *Kitāb al-Khidāb* that al-Zuhrī said: “We used to dye our hair black while our faces were still youthful, but when our faces sagged and our teeth loosened, we stopped doing so.” *Fath al-Bārī* (10/354–355).
Al-Albānī said: “It appears that al-Zuhrī was entirely unaware of any hadith prohibiting it and therefore judged the matter according to his personal preference. In any event, no one’s action or statement after the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) can serve as proof. The preceding hadith constitutes evidence against al-Zuhrī and others.” *Ghāyat al-Marām* (p. 84).
(2) *Thughāma*—with a damma on *thā* and an ungeminated *ghayn*—is a plant whose blossoms and fruit are intensely white. It is also said to be a tree that turns as white as snow.
