Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil

is severe. Kinship ties have been severed: relatives no longer maintain relations with one another. Instead, they have become estranged and turned away from one another. Months and years pass while they live in the same town, yet they neither visit nor keep in touch. This undoubtedly stems from weakness of faith, for the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) urged the maintenance of kinship ties and warned against severing them.

He said, “Allah created all beings, and when He had finished creating them, the bond of kinship stood up and said, ‘Is this the station of one seeking refuge with You from being severed?’ He said, ‘Yes. Would you not be pleased that I uphold whoever upholds you and cut off whoever cuts you off?’ It replied, ‘Yes indeed.’ He said, ‘Then that is yours.’”

Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “Recite, if you wish: ‘Would you then, if you turned away, spread corruption in the land and sever your ties of kinship? (22) It is they whom Allah has cursed, leaving them deaf and blinding their sight. (23) Will they not then reflect upon the Quran, or do their hearts have locks upon them?’” (1) [Muhammad: 22–24]

And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “No one who severs ties of kinship will enter Paradise” (2).

As for the mistreatment of neighbors, there is no end to what could be said about it. How many people do not even know their neighbors or inquire about their circumstances so that they might lend them a helping hand if they are in need! Indeed, they do not even refrain from harming them.

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade harming one’s neighbor, saying, “Whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day must not harm his neighbor” (3).
