Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil

The two Shaykhs narrated from Abū Hurayra—may Allah be pleased with him—who reported that the Messenger of Allah—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—said: “The Hour will not be established until the buttocks (1) of the women of Daws sway around Dhū al-Khalasa” (2).

(1) *Alyāt* is the plural of *alya* and here means “buttocks”; that is, their buttocks sway during their circumambulation, as they did in the pre-Islamic period. See *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth* (1/64). (2) *Al-Khalasa*: the *khā* and the following *lām* both bear a *fatḥa*. This is its best-known vocalization. Al-Khalasa is a plant with red seeds resembling agate beads. *Dhū al-Khalasa* was the name of the sanctuary that housed the idol. It is also said that the sanctuary was named al-Khalasa, while the idol was named Dhū al-Khalasa. *Dhū al-Khalasa* was also the name given to two idols: one belonging to Daws and the other to Khatham and other Arab tribes. The idol of Daws is the one intended in this hadith. Its site remains known to this day in the Zahrān region, south of Taif, at a place called Tharūq in the territory of Daws. Dhū al-Khalasa is located near a village called Ramas, with both the *rā* and *mīm* bearing a *fatḥa. It stands atop a high rocky hill bordered on the east by the Dhū al-Khalasa ravine and on the west by Tihāma. Some large stones once used for construction remain on the hill, indicating that a substantial structure formerly stood there. See *Fath al-Bārī* (8/71) and Hamad al-Jāsir, *Kitāb fī Sarāt Ghāmid wa-Zahrān* (pp. 336–340). The idol of Khatham was likewise called Dhū al-Khalasa. It was a sanctuary built by the two Arab tribes of Khatham and Bajīla as a rival to the Kaaba. The Prophet—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—sent Jarīr ibn Abd Allah al-Bajalī with one hundred and fifty horsemen, who demolished and burned it. The account of its demolition was narrated by Imam al-Bukhārī in his *Sahīh* (8/70–71, with *Fath al-Bārī*), in =
