between what is lawful and what is unlawful.

17 — The Emergence of Musical Instruments (1) and Their Being Deemed Lawful:

Sahl ibn Saʿd reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Near the end of time, there will be people swallowed by the earth, stones raining down, and transformation.” He was asked, “When will that be, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “When musical instruments and singing girls appear” (2).

A considerable part of this sign already occurred in past ages, but it is even more manifest today. Musical instruments have appeared in this age and become tremendously widespread, while male and female singers have grown numerous. They are the ones referred to in this hadith as (qaynāt, female singers).

More serious still is that many people deem musical instruments lawful. Those who do so have been threatened with transformation, stones raining down upon them, and being swallowed by the earth, as in the preceding hadith and in the report established in the Sahīh of al-Bukhārī, may Allah have mercy on him. He said: Hishām ibn Ammār said: We were told by

(1) *Ma’āzif* (musical instruments) are instruments of entertainment, such as the lute, the *tanbūr*, and the frame drum; every kind of such play is called *azf*. See *al-Nihāya fī Gharīb al-Hadīth*, vol. 3, p. 230. (2) Ibn Mājah narrated a portion from the beginning of this hadith in his *Sunan*, vol. 2, p. 1350, ed. Muhammad Fu’ād Abd al-Bāqī. Al-Haythamī said: “It was narrated by al-Tabarānī. Its chain includes Abd Allah ibn Abī al-Zinād, in whom there is some weakness; the remaining narrators in one of its two chains are among the narrators of the *Sahīh*.” *Majma al-Zawā’id*, vol. 8, p. 10. Al-Albānī graded it “authentic.” See *Sahīh al-Jāmi al-Saghīr*, vol. 3, p. 216, hadith no. 3559.
