generations, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “The best people are my generation, then those who follow them, and then those who follow them” (1).
Knowledge will continue to diminish and ignorance to increase until people no longer know the obligatory duties of Islam. Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Islam will wear away just as the pattern on a garment wears away, until people no longer know what fasting, prayer, sacrificial rites, or charity are. The Book of Allah will be taken away in a single night, and not one verse of it will remain on earth. Some groups of people will remain—elderly men and women—who will say: ‘We found our forefathers adhering to this declaration, saying, “There is no deity but Allah,” so we say it too.’” Silah (2) asked him, “What benefit will ‘There is no deity but Allah’ bring them when they do not know what prayer, fasting, sacrificial rites, or charity are?” Hudhayfah turned away from him. He repeated the question three times, and each time Hudhayfah turned away from him. On the third occasion, Hudhayfah turned to him and said, “O Silah, it will save them from the Fire.” He repeated this three times (3).
