Ashrat al-Saah - al-WabilYusuf al-Wabil

During the era of the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—the following hadith was well known: “Leave the Turks alone so long as they leave you alone” (1).

= See al-Qurtubī, *al-Tadhkira*, pp. 592–595; and *Awn al-Ma‘būd*, vol. 11, pp. 415–416. (1) *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, Book of Battles, chapter “The Prohibition against Provoking the Turks and Abyssinians,” vol. 11, p. 409, with *Awn al-Ma‘būd*. Ibn Hajar said: “Al-Tabarānī narrated it from Mu‘āwiya.” *Fath al-Bārī*, vol. 6, p. 609. Al-‘Ajlūnī said: “Al-Zurqānī graded it *hasan* (acceptable). The original source states that Abū Dāwūd narrated it from one of the Companions, from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him… Al-Nasā’ī narrated it… Likewise, al-Tabarānī narrated it in *al-Kabīr* and *al-Awsat* from Ibn Mas‘ūd, who attributed it to the Prophet, with the wording: ‘Leave the Turks alone so long as they leave you alone.’ He said: ‘The first to wrest from my community its dominion and what Allah has granted it will be the descendants of Qantūrā.’ Al-Tabarānī also narrated it from Mu‘āwiya ibn Abī Sufyān, who attributed it to the Prophet, through several chains that corroborate one another.” See al-‘Ajlūnī, *Kashf al-Khafā’ wa-Muzīl al-Ilbās ‘ammā Ishtahara min al-Ahādīth ‘alā Alsinat al-Nās*, vol. 1, p. 38; annotated by Ahmad al-Qallāsh, Mu’assasat al-Risāla, Beirut. Al-Albānī declared this hadith “fabricated.” See *Da‘īf al-Jāmi‘ al-Saghīr*, vol. 1, p. 81, hadith no. 105. After listing those who narrated it, al-Sakhāwī said: “In light of these reports, it is not permissible to judge it fabricated. Al-Hāfiz Diyā’ al-Dīn al-Maqdisī compiled a treatise on the emergence of the Turks, which we heard.” *Al-Maqāsid al-Hasana fī Bayān Kathīr min al-Ahādīth al-Mushtahara ‘alā al-Alsina*, pp. 16–17; edited and annotated by Abd Allāh Muhammad al-Siddīq, with an introduction by Abd al-Wahhāb Abd al-Latīf; printed by Dār al-Adab al-‘Arabī and published by Maktabat al-Khānjī, Egypt, 1375 AH. Al-Haythamī said: “Al-Tabarānī narrated it in *al-Kabīr* and *al-Awsat*. Its chain includes Uthmān ibn Yahyā al-Qarqasānī, whom I do not know; its remaining narrators are among the narrators of the *Sahīh*.” *Majma‘ al-Zawā’id*, vol. 7, p. 312. Thus, the least that can be said of this hadith is that it is *hasan*, especially since al-Hāfiz Ibn Hajar stated that it was well known during the era of the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—and raised no criticism of it. This indicates that he considered it established.
