= Abū al-Khattāb Umar ibn Dihya said: “This chain of transmission is sound.” Al-Qurtubī, *al-Tadhkira*, p. 593. Al-Haythamī said: “Abū Dāwūd narrated it in abridged form; Ahmad and al-Bazzār also narrated it in abridged form, and its narrators are among the narrators of the *Sahīh*.” *Majma‘ al-Zawā’id*, vol. 7, p. 311. However, Abū Dāwūd’s narration differs from that of Imam Ahmad. The apparent meaning of Abū Dāwūd’s narration is that the Muslims will drive the Turks on three occasions until they bring them into the Arabian Peninsula. It states: “A people with small eyes will fight you”—meaning the Turks. He said: “You will drive them on three occasions until you bring them into the Arabian Peninsula…”—to the end of the hadith. *Sunan Abī Dāwūd*, Book of Battles, chapter “Fighting the Turks,” vol. 11, pp. 412–413, with *Awn al-Ma‘būd*. The author of *Awn al-Ma‘būd* said: “In my view, Ahmad’s narration is the correct one. As for Abū Dāwūd’s narration, it appears that one of its transmitters made an error. “This is supported by Ahmad’s report that Burayda thereafter always kept two or three camels, travel provisions, and waterskins with him so that he could flee from the tribulation caused by the Turkish rulers, of which he had heard from the Prophet—peace and blessings be upon him. “It is also supported by the fact that one of Abū Dāwūd’s transmitters was uncertain; hence, at the end of the hadith, he said: ‘Or as he said.’ “It is further supported by the fact that events occurred in the manner described in Ahmad’s narration.” *Awn al-Ma‘būd*, vol. 11, p. 414. He then quoted al-Qurtubī’s account of the Turks’ emergence: they launched three incursions against the Muslims. During the last of these, they destroyed Baghdad and killed the caliph, scholars, rulers, men of distinction, and devout worshippers. They penetrated deep into the lands, briefly took control of *al-Shām* (the Levant), and spread terror into Egypt, until al-Malik al-Muzaffar (the Victorious King), surnamed Qutuz, confronted them at the Battle of Ayn Jālūt. He defeated and triumphed over them, just as Tālūt (Saul) had been victorious. Their forces scattered, and Allah protected the Muslims from their evils. =
