voice any objection to what they were doing(1).

The verb yarbaʿūn—with an open bāʾ(2)—means that they were lifting it.

Yet whoever permits wrestling with a wager is forced into one of two positions(3):
• Either he disallows the stake being put up by both contestants together(4); instead, it must be furnished by only one of them or by someone else(5).

(1) I have not located the report with that exact wording, but something similar is related: the Prophet passed by a group who were "squaring" (i.e. lifting and balancing) a stone. They said, “This is the stone of the strong men.” He replied: “Shall I tell you who among you is truly the strongest? The one who masters himself when angered.” Abu Ubayd records it in Gharib al-Hadith 1/15–16, through Thabit al-Bunani from Abd al-Rahman b. Ajlan, raised (marfuʿ). The hadith is mursal with a sound chain. Al-Bukhari notes in his Tarikh 5/332: “ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAjlan narrates mursal reports from the Prophet; Thabit transmits from him.” ʿAbd al-Rahman, a Kufan tabiʿi, is reliable; see Tahdhib al-Kamal 17/278. A comparable wording is also transmitted by Abu Ubayd 1/16–17 from ʿAmir b. Saʿd b. Abi Waqqas, marfuʿ, likewise a sound mursal. A mawquf version is firmly established from Ibn ʿAbbas: after losing his sight he passed by people who were (yarfaʿun, “lifting”; in another wording: yajuddhun, “hauling”) a stone. He asked, “What are they doing?” They said, “They are lifting a stone to see who is strongest.” Ibn ʿAbbas replied, “The workers of Allah are stronger than these.” Reported by Maʿmar in his Jamiʿ 11/444; Ibn al-Mubarak, al-Zuhd, no. 26; Abu Ubayd, Gharib al-Hadith 1/16–17; al-Harbi, Gharib 3/1171; and Abu Nuʿaym, Riyadat al-Abdan, no. 5, all with a sound chain. (2) MSS H and MT read yarfaʿun (with initial yā’); this is an error. (3) MS MT reads jawaz (“permissibility”). (4) Copy Z has yukhrij in place of yujawwizu (“to deem permissible”). (5) MS MT adds: “minhuma muqabil yataʿayyan jaʿlahu fi ahadihima aw fi ghayrihima” (“of the two, a counter-stake must be placed either with one of them or elsewhere”).
