They further said: The ḥadīth may also be understood to mean that the most deserving things on which to spend prize money are these three, because their benefit is complete and their usefulness widespread. In that sense it would be like his saying (1): “There is no usury except in deferred exchange” (2)—that is, the fullest form of usury lies in credit transactions.
They also argued: This is similar to his words, “There is no prayer for the neighbor of the mosque except in the mosque” (3), and, “There is no prayer when food is present, nor while one is resisting the call of nature…”
(1) MS Z reads: “fayakunu qawluhu ʿalayhi al-salam” (“so his statement—peace be upon him—…”).
(2) Reported by al-Bukhari, Sahih, no. 2069, and by Muslim, Sahih, no. 1596, on the authority of Usama b. Zayd.
(3) This wording is transmitted from several Companions through weak chains—among them Abu Hurayra, Jabir, Aisha, and ʿAli. It was declared weak by Ibn al-Jawzi, Ibn Hazm, al-Bayhaqi, al-ʿIraqi, Ibn Hajar, al-Saghani, al-Fayruzabadi, and others.
A mawquf (Companion-level) version from ʿAli appears in al-Shafiʿi, al-Umm, 8/397–398, no. 3279; through him it is cited by al-Bayhaqi, al-Maʿrifa, 4/104; Ibn Abi Shayba, 1/303, no. 3469; ʿAbd al-Razzaq, 1/497, no. 1915; and additional sources. The chain runs via Abu Hayyan, from his father, from ʿAli, and adds: “It was asked, ‘Who is the neighbour of the mosque?’ He replied, ‘Whoever hears the muʾadhdhin.’ ”
The isnad contains Abu Hayyan’s father, Saʿid b. Hayyan. Al-Dhahabi says of him in al-Mizan, 3/194: “Hardly known … al-Tirmidhi narrated from him a hadith of ʿAli and called it gharib.” Al-Muʿallimi remarks: “Some have claimed the report from ʿAli to be sound, but that is not so; Saʿid b. Hayyan’s meeting with ʿAli is unverified, and most likely did not occur” (al-Fawaʾid al-Majmuʿa, p. 22).
Ibn Hazm graded the athar authentic, whereas Ibn Hajar, al-Muʿallimi, and al-Albani deemed it weak—and that is indeed the correct assessment
