“And indeed it is a right upon Allah that He does not raise anything of this world without lowering it.”
I said: Reflect on his wording in the first narration: “that He does not raise anything,” and in the second: “that He does not raise anything of this world without lowering it.” Thus, the lowering is assigned to whatever has itself risen and become elevated (1), not to the one whom He—exalted is He—raises; for if He elevates a servant through his obedience and honors him by it, He will never abase him (2).

As for (3) his Companions’ engaging in archery contests in his presence:
In Sahih al-Bukhari (4) it is reported from Salamah ibn al-Akwaʿ who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a group of his Companions (5) who were shooting arrows in the marketplace. He said, “Shoot, O sons of Ishmael, for your father was an archer. Shoot, and I am with the clan of so-and-so.” Salamah added: One of the two teams thereupon laid down their bows. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, “Why are you not shooting?” They replied, “How can we shoot when you are with them?” He said, “Shoot, for I am with all of you.”
