the horses, and he gave preference to the colts (1) at the finish line.’

As for (2) his arranging races between camels:
In Sahih al-Bukhari, in a suspended report (3), Anas ibn Malik said, ‘Al-ʿAdbāʾ was never beaten. Then a Bedouin arrived on his mount, raced her, and the Bedouin’s camel outstripped her. This seemed hard on the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he said, “It is a right upon Allah that He does not raise anything (4) without subsequently lowering it.”’
Al-Bukhari likewise relates this incident in his Sahih (5) through Humayd on the authority of Anas, and he said:
(1) al-qurrah is the plural of qariḥ. Ibn al-Aʿrabi says that a horse is called qariḥ once it enters its fifth year; others set the term at the beginning of the sixth year. See al-Azhari, Tahdhib al-lughah 3:2920.
(2) Omitted in manuscript Z.
(3) Cited by al-Bukhari in Book 60, “Jihad,” chapter 59, “The Prophet’s she-camel,” 3:1054, no. 2717. Abu Dawud supplies the fully connected chain in his Sunan, no. 4802, and the present wording is his; the isnad is sound. Note: This suspended report appears only in the Mustamli recension, which reads: “It was extended by Musa from Hammad from Thabit from Anas from the Prophet.” Al-Bukhari himself does not quote that wording; Ibn al-Qayyim reproduced it from Sunan Abi Dawud because Abu Dawud narrates it directly from Musa through Hammad.
(4) Sunan Abi Dawud adds the phrase: “... anything of this world …”.
