1 – The book’s name and title:
There is complete agreement among all who have mentioned the work that its title is “Al-Furūsiyya al-Muḥammadiyya.”
– This is the designation recorded on the manuscript copies themselves: the Ẓāhiriyya copy, the Ḥāʾil copy, and the Iraqi copy.
– It is likewise the title cited by the author’s biographers: al-Ṣafadī in Al-Wāfī bi’l-Wafayāt (2/196); Ibn Taghrī Birdī in Al-Manhal al-Ṣāfī (3/63); and al-Baghdādī in Hadiyyat al-ʿĀrifīn (2/158).
– The same wording is used by those who have quoted from the book or relied upon it: Ibn al-Nahhās (d. 814 AH), al-Sakhāwī (d. 902 AH), and al-Saffārīnī (d. 1188 AH), as will be detailed below.
Accordingly, the established title is Al-Furūsiyya al-Muḥammadiyya.
This conclusion is not undermined by the author’s own remark in the present work (p. 7), “…a summary on prophetic, sharʿī horsemanship…,” nor by his wording in Iʿlām al-Muwaqqiʿīn (4/22), “on sharʿī horsemanship,” for in both places he is merely describing the subject matter, not formally assigning a title, as is evident from
