and in another wording: ‘He organized (1) a race between the horses and rewarded the winner,’ (2).
Likewise, in the Musnad (3) it is narrated from Anas that he was asked, ‘Did you use to place wagers…’

(1) In the Z (ظ) and Mt (مط) copies the word “sabiq” (the winner) occurs in both instances, whereas the reading adopted here follows the H copy and the Musnad. (2) Musnad Ahmad 2:91, no. 5656; al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-kubra 10:20 (a longer version), and others. The isnad runs through Qirad Abu Nuh and Hammad ibn Sulayman, both from al-Umari, from Nafiʿ, from Ibn ʿUmar: “The horses used to race over six miles, so the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave a prize to the winner.” – wording of Hammad. I say: The clause “and he gave a prize to the winner” is peculiar, for ʿAbd al-Razzaq reports the same isnad from al-Umari, from Nafiʿ, with the wording found in the two Sahihs, omitting that phrase; see his Musannaf 5:304, no. 9695. The version of ʿAbd al-Razzaq is stronger: although Qirad is reliable, he has some solitary reports, and Hammad ibn Sulayman was deemed “unknown” by al-Bayhaqi. Moreover, ʿAbd al-Razzaq’s wording agrees with the transmissions of the major narrators from Nafiʿ—Malik, Ayyub, al-Layth ibn Saʿd, Musa ibn ʿUqbah, ʿUbayd Allah ibn ʿUmar (in his sound version), Juwayriyah, and others. Hence the phrase “and he gave a prize to the winner” is anomalous (shadh). Al-Zuhri is also reported to have said: “The first person to grant a prize for it was ʿUmar ibn al-Khattab.” Narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah, al-Musannaf 6:531, no. 33537. See Talkhis al-habir 4:181. (3) Musnad Ahmad 3:160 and 256, nos. 12727 and 13689; also Ibn Abi Shaybah 6:532, no. 33547; al-Tabarani, al-Awsat 6:303, no. 8850; al-Tahawi, Mushkil al-athar 5:158, no. 1899; al-Daraqutni 4:301; and others. All routes go through Saʿid ibn Zayd—al-Zubayr ibn Khurayt—Abu Labid—Anas, who gives a longer version… Al-Tabarani commented: “No one narrates this hadith from Abu Labid except al-Zubayr ibn Khurayt,”
