Al-FurūsiyyaIbn al-Qayyim

arranged races between the horses: he released the well-conditioned mounts, their course running from al-Hafyāʾ to Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ; as for the unconditioned ones, their course ran from Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ to the Mosque of Banū Zurayq.’

In the two Ṣaḥīḥs (1), Mūsā ibn ʿUqbah reports: ‘The distance from al-Hafyāʾ to Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ is six or seven miles.’

Al-Bukhārī (2) said: ‘Sufyān stated that the span between al-Hafyāʾ and Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ is five or six miles, and from Thaniyyat al-Wadāʿ to the Mosque of Banū Zurayq is one mile.’

And in the Musnad of Imām Aḥmad (3), from the report of ʿAbd Allāh ibn ʿUmar as well: ‘The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, organized horse races and entered a wager.’

(1) Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 2715, and by Muslim, no. 1870; the wording cited here is that of al-Bukhari, which Muslim does not reproduce. (2) In Sahih al-Bukhari, Book 10: Jihad, Chapter 56, “Stakes in horse racing,” 3:1053. (3) Musnad Ahmad 2:67, no. 5348, through Attab—‘Abd Allah ibn al-Mubarak—‘Ubayd Allah ibn ‘Umar—Nafi‘—Ibn ‘Umar. I say: The expression “wa rahan” (“and for a wager”) is extremely unusual. A number of transmitters—such as Yahya al-Qattan, al-Thawri, Abu Usamah, Muhammad ibn ‘Ubayd, Ibn Numayr, and others—narrated from ‘Ubayd Allah through Nafi‘ with the same wording found in the two Sahihs, but without the phrase “wa rahan.” The same is true of the transmissions of Imam Malik, Ayyub al-Sakhtiyani, al-Layth ibn Sa‘d, Musa ibn ‘Uqbah, Juwayriyah ibn Asma’, Isma‘il ibn Umayyah, and Usamah ibn Zayd: all relate from Nafi‘ on the authority of Ibn ‘Umar a wording comparable to that of the two Sahihs, again omitting “wa rahan.” Accordingly, the inclusion of this word is anomalous (shadh), and Allah knows best. See al-Musnad al-jami‘ 10:621–622 and Ithaf al-mahrah 9:199.
