come to pass (1), and they deposited the wagered stake from both sides. All of this occurred with the Prophet’s (2) knowledge and permission. It is likewise established that he thrust with the spear, rode horses both bareback and with a saddle (3), and girded on the sword.

As for his racing on foot:

In the Musnad of Imam Ahmad and the Sunan of Abū Dāwūd, it is narrated from ʿĀʾishah who said: “The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, once raced me and I outstripped him. After some time had passed, when flesh had weighed me down, he raced me again and he outstripped me. He then said, ‘This one makes up for that one.’ ” (4)

(1) In MSS Mat and Ḥ the phrase reads “ʿalā allā yakūna dhālik” (on the condition that this not occur). The copyist of MS Ḥ added a marginal remark: “Abu Bakr’s murāhana (wager) with the people of Mecca took place before gambling (qimār) became forbidden—reflect.” MS Mat further has al-ḥaẓẓ (good fortune) in place of al-khaṭar (risk). (2) Supplied from MS Ẓ. (3) MSS Ḥ and Mat read musrajatan wa-muʿarrāʾ (saddled and unsaddled). (4) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad 6:39, no. 24118 (his wording includes “hādhihi bi-tīka,” – “this for that”); by Abū Dāwūd, no. 2578, with a similar wording; by Ibn Mājah, Sunan no. 1979; al-Humaydī, Musnad no. 261; al-Ṭayālisī, Musnad no. 1565; Isḥāq, Musnad 2: no. 806; al-Tirmidhī, ʿIlal al-kabīr no. 707; al-Ṭabarānī, al-Muʿjam al-kabīr 23: no. 125; and others—all through chains from Hishām b. ʿUrwa, from his father, from ʿĀʾisha. Considerable variation exists in the transmission: several narrators relate it from Hishām through an unnamed man, from Abū Salama, from ʿĀʾisha. (That unnamed transmitter may be ʿAlī b. Zayd b. Judʿān, who is weak.) This latter route was preferred by Abū Zurʿa al-Rāzī and al-Dāraquṭnī, and al-Bukhārī hinted at the same. See Ibn Abī Ḥātim, al-ʿIlal 2: no. 2482; al-Tirmidhī, al-ʿIlal al-kabīr, p. 379; the editor’s notes on Musnad al-Ṭayālisī 3:71–72; and al-Dāraquṭnī, al-ʿIlal.
