and the spear; they charged (1) before him on the fields of contest with the vigor (2) of matched contenders, and they lavished (3) for his victory their very lives and wealth—their costliest treasures—in fulfillment of the sale concluded at the hands of the Truthful, the Trustworthy, with the Purchaser Himself guaranteeing the deal: “Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in the path of Allah; they kill and are killed—a promise binding upon Him in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Qur’an” (At-Tawbah 9:111).

Blessed is He who sent His messengers with clear proofs, sent down with them the Book and the Balance, and sent down iron, in which there is stern might and benefits for people—by which human interests are perfected (4). (1) The wording “wa-tasawwala bayna yadayhi” (and they grappled in his presence) is found in MS Z; MS H leaves a blank of roughly two words here. (2) MS T reads “idha tasabaqat,” whereas MS H has “idha … al-aqran,” with a blank in place of the missing word. (3) MS T gives “wa-surrifat,” while MS H omits “wa-tabadhala,” so the passage there reads “fi nasratihi min tafarrasaha.” (4) MSS H and T read: “wa-manafiʿ tatimmu biha masalih … .” (5) MS T has “wa-asara-hu hilyata ahli al-iman,” whereas MS H reads “wa-asara-hu ahli al-iman.” (6) MS T reads: “fa-awjaba mahabbata al-jawad al-shujaʿ, wa-maqt al-bakhil al-jaban.” MS Z records “… al-shujaʿ wa-kamalahu wa-maqtahu,” with the word “wa-kamalahu” apparently crossed out. (7) MSS H and T read: “Rabb al-ʿalamin, wa-ilah al-awwalin wa-al-akhirin.”
