“Judgment comes before the courage of the courageous;
It is the first, while that holds the second place.
But when the two are joined in a single soul even once,
It rises to every lofty station.”
– Half a man,(1) then, is he who possesses one of the two qualities but lacks the other.
– And the one who is nothing is he who is stripped of both qualities.(2)
We shall conclude this(3) book with a verse from the Book of Allah, in which He gathers together the finest guidance for the management of war. He, the Exalted, says:
“O you who believe! When you encounter a host, stand firm and remember Allah much, so that you may succeed. (45) Obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute with one another lest you falter and your strength depart. And be patient—indeed, Allah is with the patient. (46)” [Al-Anfāl 8:45-46]
In these two verses He commands the combatants to observe five matters which, whenever they come together in any group,(4) that group is granted victory, no matter how few its numbers and how many its enemies.
The first of these is steadfastness.
