than those who are killed while advancing.
In the advice Abu Bakr al-Ṣiddīq gave to Khalid ibn al-Walid he said, “Seek death, and life will be granted to you.” (1)
Khalid ibn al-Walid said, “I have been present at countless battles in both the Days of Ignorance and in Islam, and there is not a span of my body that does not bear a spear-thrust or a sword-stroke. Yet here I am, dying on my bed—may the eyes of cowards never sleep!” (2)
Every rational person is certain that meeting death head-on when it comes is better than turning one’s back to it—and Allah knows best. Hasan ibn Thabit expressed this when he said: (3)
Our wounds do not bleed upon our heels;
rather, the blood drips forward from our feet. (4)
(1) See Ibn Qutayba, Uyoon al-Akhbar, 1/125–126. Note: the name “Abu Bakr” is absent from MS Z.
(2) Reported by Ibn Asakir in Tarikh Dimashq, 16/273; the chain is very weak for two reasons: (i) it contains al-Waqidi, who is unreliable, and (ii) the isnad is broken. What is soundly established from him is that, when death approached, he said: “I sought death where it is usually found, yet it was not decreed for me—so I must die on my bed….” This wording was also transmitted by al-Tabarani and by Ibn Asakir (16/269); al-Haythami remarks in Majma al-Zawaid, 9/350: “Its isnad is good,” and that judgment is correct.
(3) The words from “By Allah” up to “saying” follow MS Z.
(4) The line appears in Abu Tammam’s Hamasah, 1/114, and is attributed to Husayn ibn al-Humam ibn Rabiʿa al-Murri, a celebrated pre-Islamic poet and horseman. See also Ibn Qutayba, al-Shiʿr wa al-Shuʿaraʾ, p. 394, and Khizanat al-Adab, 7/461, 465.
