is more damaging and, they claim, it ruins the cross-bow altogether; some of them twist the bow by eleven hand-spans, twelve, or even more.
Section: Another Scale of Balance
Know that establishing the balance is of two kinds. Some archers (1) determine the balance at the very start and keep to it until the moment of (2) release, while others take the measurement at the very end.
Those who measure first do so in two ways:
- He sets the arrowhead on the mark, verifies the alignment, and draws while keeping his eye on his left forearm and right elbow, making sure they remain straight and even. This is Tāhir’s method.
- He looks at the target first; when he has drawn half the arrow, or a little less, he verifies the alignment and lets fly (3). This is the better of the two approaches and the more accurate.
Those who measure last are likewise of two kinds:
- He must not neglect (4) to verify the balance at the outset; when there remains (5) of the

أكثر نكايةً، وإنه يبطل النُّشَّاب، فمنهم من حرف القوس إحدى عشرة قبضة، واثنتي عشرة قبضة وأكثر.
فصلٌ في ميزانٍ آخر
واعلم أنَّ الوزن على نوعين فمنهم (١) من يزن أوَّلًا ويستمر على وزنه إلى حين (٢) إطلاقه، ومنهم من يزن آخرًا.
فأما من يزن أوَّلًا، فعلى وجهين أيضًا:
أحدهما: أن يجعل النَّصل في العلامة، ويحقِّقه، ويجبذ عليه من نظره إلى ذراعه الشمال ومرفقه اليُمْنَى في اعتدالهما واستوائهما. وهذا مذهب طاهر.
والوجه الثاني: أن ينظر أوَّلًا إلى العلامة، فإذا جبذ من السَّهم نصفه أو أقلَّ حقَّقه وأطلق (٣).
وهذا أحمدُ النَّوعين، وأعظمُهما سدادًا.
وأما الذي يزن آخرًا فعلى نوعين أيضًا:
أحدهما: أن لا يخلَّ (٤) بتحقيق الوزن أوَّلًا، فإذا بقي له (٥) من

(٣) ليس في (ح) (وأطلق).
(٤) في (ظ) (يجعل) وهو خطأ.
(٥) في (ظ، مط) (لهم).
