This copy is characterized by the following points:
- Its early provenance: it was penned about 79 years after the death of Ibn al-Qayyim.
- It alone preserves numerous additions—ranging from a single word to a full page or more—as indicated in the book’s marginal notes; see pp. 112–113, 165.
- The scribe annotated the author’s statements and counted the divisions of the work, arriving at 165 chapters. In this edition I have placed an asterisk (*) at the end of every chapter on which he comments critically.
the author indicate that he is a scholar with considerable knowledge and practical experience in horsemanship, warfare, and combat. Among his writings is Faraj al-Makrub fi Ahkam al-Hurub wa Maʿanatiha, wa Mudaratiha, wa ma Yasuʾ bi Amriha (“Relief of the Distressed on the Rules of War, its Hardships, its Management, and its Troubles”), in addition to other works.
These annotations in the present manuscript appear to me to be by this Yusuf b. Ahmad, not by Ibn Zakkun, for several reasons:
1. None of the biographies of Ibn Zakkun, as far as I have seen, describe him as having participated in warfare or possessing expertise in it, unlike Yusuf b. Ahmad.
2. Likewise, no biographer of Ibn Zakkun—again, to the best of my knowledge—attributes to him a book entitled Faraj al-Makrub fi Ahkam al-Hurub …
3. The style of these objections and replies is somewhat harsh and forceful; it is closer to the language of Yusuf b. Ahmad, seasoned in military matters, than to that of Ibn Zakkun, who is depicted as an ascetic devoted to worship.
4. The notes open with the phrase “I say: …,” which clearly shows that they are the words of the copyist, not of Ibn Zakkun.
