and bind it down firmly so that it does not slip off the grip (1).
If the defect originates in the string, twist (2) or knot it. If it comes from the bow itself, repair it by examining the bow, removing the blemish, or replacing it altogether. Should the string persist in striking the grip and he cannot eliminate the problem, let him push it back by the breadth of a finger and a half along the upper part of the string and by half a finger (3) along the lower; once this is done, the string will never touch the grip again (4).
Section: A slack left-hand grip and how to remedy it
The grip slackens for three reasons:
- The flesh at the bases (5) of the fingers bunches up so that one part covers another, and the hand loosens as a result.
- The grip is too slender while the palm is broad, preventing him from tightening it.
- He clamps his three fingers—the thumb and the index finger,
while MS Ḥ also records raqīqa (thin). The “=” sign is found in place of the word daqiqa (fine).

قويًّا؛ لئلا يفلت (١) من المقبض.
وما كان منها من الوتر: فتَلَهُ (٢) أو عَقَدَه.
وما كان من القوس: أصْلَحه بتفقُّده وإزالة عيبه، أو الاستبدال به، فإن ألحَّ عليه من الوتر، ولم يقدر على إزالته؛ فليدفع بمقدار عرض أصبع ونصف أصبع من الوتر الأعلى ونصف أصبع (٣) من الأسفل، فلا يعتريه المسّ بعدها أبدًا (٤).
فصلٌ في استرخاء قبضة الشمال وما يزيله
واسترخاؤها يكون من ثلاثة أوجه:
أحدها: اجتماع لحم أصول (٥) الأصابع، فيغطي بعضُها بعضًا، فتسترخي لذلك.
والثاني: من دقَّة المقبض وسِعَة الكف، فلم يمكنه شدها.
والثالث (٦): أنْ يشدَّ أصابعه الثلاثة: الإبهام، والسبابة،
