Al-FurūsiyyaIbn al-Qayyim

The author of al-Mughni mentions it, but I do not know who traced its chain of transmission (1).

If a man says to another (2), “Shoot this arrow, and if you hit the mark you will have one dirham,” or, “Answer this question correctly and you will receive such-and-such,” or, “Memorize this book and you shall be given such-and-such,” the agreement is valid. It counts as a straightforward jiʿālah (stipulated reward) and bears no relation whatsoever to the racing wager. He is merely offering payment for an act in which he has a legitimate interest (3), for a race is only between two or more competitors (4), and the prize is awarded to the one who comes in first.

and Ishaq ibn Jabir – or Ibn Abd Allah – was contradicted. Abd Allah ibn Isa ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla narrated the report from Ikrima, from Yahya ibn Yaʿmur, from Abu Hurayra with a raised (marfuʿ) isnad, saying only: “Whoever lures a slave away … and whoever corrupts a woman against her husband …,” without the clause, “and whoever rallies the cavalry … .” This version was recorded by Ahmad (2/397); Abu Dawud (2175, 5170); al-Bukhari in al-Tarikh (1/396); Ibn Hibban (12/370, no. 5560); al-Bayhaqi (8/3); and others. That wording is the sound one. The route that passes through Ishaq ibn Jabir (or Ibn Abd Allah) al-ʿAdani is not reliable, for he is unknown, and he alone reported the wording “and whoever rallies the cavalry … .” Notice: In Tabarani’s isnad the name Ishaq ibn Jabir al-ʿAdani is missing; it may be that Dirar, who narrates from al-Darawardi, erred and omitted him—Dirar is weak—or the name was lost in printing. Allah knows best. (1) MS Z: mukhrajihi; see al-Mughni, 13/434. (2) MS Z: lil-akhar. (3) Not in MS Z. (4) MS H: aʿda instead of fa-saʿidan.
