Section: The qualities of a hit and its categories
A hit is of two kinds: unrestricted and qualified.
- The unrestricted hit is striking the target in whatever manner it occurs—whether in its centre, its right side, or its left. It likewise covers what lands in the target without piercing it, what pierces it without passing through, what pierces and passes through, and the like.⦗1⦘
If the two competitors simply use the word “hit” without adding any qualification, there are two legal views:
• The first holds that the contract is valid and that the term embraces every form just mentioned.
• The second—cited in al-Mughnī⦗2⦘—maintains that specifying the nature of the hit is a condition for the validity of the archery match.⦗3⦘ Thus, should they say, “We are shooting khawāṣil,” this merely reinforces the unqualified term “hit,” for khawāṣil is another name for it in all its forms. The same act is also called qarʿ and qarṭasah; one says khaṣala, qaraʿa, or qarṭasa—all three verbs meaning “to score a hit.”⦗4⦘

If they stipulate “khawāsiq,” this refers to an arrow that pierces the target and remains embedded in it. If they stipulate “khawāziq,” it refers to one that pierces the target and then falls in front of it.
