Al-FurūsiyyaIbn al-Qayyim

Section (1)

The sunnah is to set up two targets: both archers shoot at one of them, then they both proceed (2) to the other, retrieve the arrows, and shoot at the first again. Such was the habitual practice of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

A hadith traced back to the Prophet states: “Every matter in which Allah is not remembered is mere idle talk or heedlessness—except for four: a man’s walking between the two targets, his training of his horse, his play with his family, and his learning to swim.” (3)

(1) See: al-Mughni, 13:422. (2) MSS Ḥ and Maṭ read: yarmiyān ("the two shoot"). (3) Related by al-Nasaʾi in al-Sunan al-Kubra 5:302-303, nos. 8938-8940; al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir 2:193, no. 1785; Abu Nuʿaym in Maʿrifat al-Sahaba 2:542, nos. 1517-1519; and others. It is transmitted through the chain: Muhammad b. Salama al-Harrani → Abu ʿAbd al-Rahim → ʿAbd al-Wahhab b. Bukht → ʿAtaʾ, who said, “I saw Jabir b. ʿAbd Allah and Jabir b. ʿUmayr …,” and he mentioned the report together with an incident. It was also narrated by Musa b. Aʿyun → Abu ʿAbd al-Rahim → ʿAbd al-Rahim al-Zuhri → ʿAtaʾ with the same content. I say: the route of Ibn Aʿyun is sounder, for there is disagreement in the transmission of Muhammad b. Salama, and the confusion appears to stem from Abu ʿAbd al-Rahim—whose name is Khalid b. Yazid (or b. Abi Yazid) al-Harrani—about whom it has been said, “there is no harm in him.” The report also has another chain from ʿAtaʾ that is not reliable. If the preserved version is in fact the route of Ibn Aʿyun, the isnad remains weak because ʿAbd al-Rahim al-Zuhri is an unknown narrator; I have found no biographical entry for him. Nevertheless, Ibn Hajar judged the chain sound, and al-Mundhiri deemed it good. See: al-Isaba =
