wrestling, racing on foot, and contests in points of learning.
Issue Seven: Competitions with the sword, spear, or staff.
Mālik and Aḥmad deemed it impermissible to stake prize money on them, while the Ḥanafī jurists permitted it. Within the Shāfiʿī school there are two views on the matter⦗1⦘.
Issue Eight: Competitions with slings for a prize.
The majority prohibited them; the Shāfiʿīs have one permissive view, and the Ḥanafī doctrine in principle allows them⦗2⦘.
Issue Nine: Strength contests involving the lifting of heavy weights, such as stones or other burdens.
The majority do not allow prize money for this. Whoever allowed it for archery matches, swimming, wrestling, or foot-races must, by the logic of his position, permit it here as well, for there is no relevant distinction.
Issue Ten: Jousting drills (muthāqafah).
The majority hold that staking a prize on it is impermissible, though some Shāfiʿīs allowed it, and that is likewise the implication of the Ḥanafī school⦗4⦘.
