—as in his ﷺ words: “Hear and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave is placed in authority over you” (1), and his statement: “Whoever parts from the community and dies, dies the death of ignorance” (2); and his words: “The devil is with the solitary individual, and he is further away from two” (3); and his saying: “Whoever breaks away from the community has cast off the bond of Islam from his neck” (4); and his declaration: “Three things against which the heart of a Muslim will harbor no malice: devoting one’s deeds sincerely to Allah,
(1) Al-Bukhari records it in his Sahih, no. 6723, on the authority of Anas ibn Malik (may Allah be pleased with him).
(2) Al-Bukhari records it in his Sahih, no. 6724, and Muslim in his Sahih, no. 1842, on the authority of Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) with the wording: “Whoever sees from his ruler something he dislikes, let him remain patient, for no one who parts from the community even a handspan and then dies does so except in the manner of the pre-Islamic period.”
(3) Its documentation has already been cited on p. 166.
(4) Reported by Ahmad, al-Musnad, 5:180, no. 21561; Ibn Abi Asim, al-Sunnah, no. 1054; Abu Dawud, no. 4758; and al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-kubra, 8:157, through the chain of Khalid ibn Wahban from Abu Dharr. Al-Dhahabi and Ibn Hajar judged Khalid unknown, although he was a maternal cousin of Abu Dharr al-Ghifari. This wording has a corroborating narration from Ibn Abbas in al-Tirmidhi (2863), Ibn Khuzaymah (1895), and others. Al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, and al-Hakim declared the longer version sound; it includes the phrase: “...for whoever separates from the community by even a handspan has cast off the bond of Islam from his neck, unless he returns...” (al-Tirmidhi’s wording). The rabqa (bond) here denotes whatever fastens a Muslim to the ties of Islam—that is, its limits, rulings, commands, and prohibitions; see Ibn al-Athir, al-Nihaya fi gharib al-hadith, 2:190.
