Hishām—mursal, from his father—reports that the Prophet ﷺ told her to meet him for the dawn prayer on the Day of Sacrifice in Mecca, or words to that effect. Abū ʿAbd Allāh said, “This too is astonishing! What business would the Prophet ﷺ have in Mecca on the Day of Sacrifice?” and he dismissed the report. (1)
He also transmitted the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, traced back to the Prophet: “Whoever has the means yet does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our place of prayer.” (2) In Hanbal’s recension he remarked, “This hadith is munkar.”
Exactly parallel to what we are considering is what he related from ʿUthmān ibn ʿUmar: Yūnus narrated to us, from al-Zuhrī, from Abū Salamah, from ʿĀʾishah, that the Messenger ﷺ said, “No vow may be made for a sin, and its expiation is the expiation for an oath.” (3)
(1) For this narration and its continuation, see al-Tahawi, Sharh Maani al-Athar 2:221; also ʿAbd Allah b. Ahmad, al-ʿIlal wa-Maʿrifat al-Rijal 3:268. Note: the phrases “qala,” “ʿan Hisham,” and “qala Abu ʿAbd Allah” are supplied by al-Tahawi and do not appear in every manuscript.
(2) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad 2:321 (no. 8273); Ibn Majah 3123; al-Daraqutni 4:277; al-Hakim, al-Mustadrak 2:422 (no. 3468); and others, through ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAyyash → ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz → Abu Hurayrah. ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAyyash, however, was contradicted: Jaʿfar ibn Rabiʿah and ʿUbayd Allah ibn Abi Jaʿfar narrated it from ʿAbd al-Rahman ibn Hurmuz from Abu Hurayrah as a mawquf report. The mawquf version is the correct one, and ʿAbd Allah ibn ʿAyyash is weak. See Nasb al-Rayah 4:207.
(3) Recorded by Ahmad, Musnad 6:247 (no. 26098); Abu Dawud 3290; al-Tirmidhi 1524; Ibn Majah 2125; al-Nasaʾi 3834–3838; and others. The hadith is defective, for al-Zuhri did not hear it from Abu Salamah; he said—
