He also narrated from ʿĀʾishah (1): “A woman extended her hand from behind a curtain with a letter for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ withdrew his hand and said, ‘I do not know whether this is a man’s hand or a woman’s.’ She replied, ‘Rather, a woman’s’ (2). He said, ‘If you were a woman you would have dyed your nails with henna.’ In another wording: ‘…your body’ (3). In the version transmitted by Hanbal he remarked, ‘This is a rejected (munkar) hadith.’
He likewise transmitted the hadith of Abū Hurayrah, traced back to the Prophet: “Whoever induces vomiting must make up the fast, whereas whoever is overtaken by vomiting has no make-up to perform” (4).
(1) Reported by Ahmad, al-Musnad 6:262; Abu Dawud, no. 4166; al-Nasaʾi, no. 5089; al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-Kubra 7:86–87; and others. The isnad is weak because it contains Mutiʿ ibn Maymun al-Anbari and Safiyyah bint Ismah, the latter being an unknown narrator. Ibn ʿAdi listed the hadith in al-Kamil 6:463 as “not preserved.”
(2) The phrase “she said: rather, a woman” is missing from MS (Z).
(3) The wording “in another version: your body” appears in MS (H); in the same manuscript the phrase “and he said in the version of Hanbal” is absent. MS (Mat) reads “your body” instead of “your fingernails.”
(4) Reported by Ahmad, al-Musnad 2:498 (no. 10463); Abu Dawud, no. 2380; al-Tirmidhi, no. 720; Ibn al-Jarud, al-Muntaqa, no. 385; Ibn Khuzaymah, Sahih 3:1960–61; Ibn Hibban, Sahih no. 3518; and others. Although the chain appears sound, the report is actually defective: Hisham ibn Hassan conflated two traditions. Imam Ahmad, al-Bukhari, the Basran scholars, and others deemed it weak, which is the correct judgment. See Ibn Taymiyyah, Sharh al-ʿUmda, “Kitab al-Siyam,” 1:395–397, no. 374.
