worth anything."
– He narrated the report describing the Prophet’s ablution as washing each limb once (1).
He also said—in Muhannā’s recension—“The ḥadiths on this matter are weak” (2).
– He transmitted the narration of Ṭalḥah ibn Maṣarrif, from his father, from his grandfather: “The Prophet wiped his head until he reached the occiput” (3).
He rejected it—in Abū Dāwūd’s version (4)—saying, “I do not know what this is, and Ibn ʿUyaynah—”
(4 – cont.) He is regarded as matruk (abandoned) in hadith. See Bahr al-Dam no. 154 and Tahdhib al-Kamal 5/32–37.
(1) The authenticity of the report that the Prophet performed wudu once for each limb is established through Ibn Abbas, who said: “The Prophet performed wudu once once.” Related by al-Bukhari, Sahih, Book of Wudu, chapter “Performing Wudu Once Once,” 1/70, no. 156.
(2) Imam Ahmad appears to have revised his earlier stance, for Abu Dawud relates: “I heard Ahmad asked about a man who performed wudu once once; he replied, ‘It is permissible.’” See Masail Abi Dawud, p. 7.
(3) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad 3/481; al-Tahawi, Sharh Maani al-Athar 1/30; Abu Dawud, no. 132; Abd ibn Humayd, Musnad (al-Muntakhab) 1/no. 384; al-Tabarani, al-Muʿjam al-Kabir 19/nos. 407–409; al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-Kubra 1/60; and others. The isnad is weak: it contains Layth ibn Abi Sulaym, a confused narrator, and the wording itself is anomalous. The hadith was criticised by Imam Ahmad, Yahya, Ibn Uyaynah, al-Bayhaqi, Ibn Hajar, and others; see Ibn Hajar, Talkhis 1/89–90. Al-qadhal (the upper part of the nape); see Majmaʿ Bahr al-Anwar 4/236.
(4) See Masail Abi Dawud, p. 307, where the narration continues: “Talhah relates from his father, from his grandfather: ‘What is this?!’”
