He also said, in Ḥarb’s transmission (1), “Not a single ḥadīth about performing istinjāʾ (cleansing oneself after relieving oneself) with water is sound.” (2)
Someone asked him, “What about the report from ʿĀʾisha?” He replied, “It is not sound, because no one besides Qatādah transmits it as marfūʿ (traced back to the Prophet).”
He further cited the narration of ʿIrāk from ʿĀʾisha: “Turn my seat toward the qiblah.” (3) He declared it defective on the grounds that it is mursal (missing a Companion in the chain) and denied that ʿIrāk had ever heard directly from ʿĀʾisha.
He also recorded a narration through Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr (4), and, in al-Marwadhī’s recension, he commented, “It is not—”
(1) Masaʾil Harb, fol. 18.
(2) It is authentically established that the Prophet performed istinja (cleansing after relieving oneself) with water, as in the hadith of Anas: “Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ entered the privy, I and another boy would bring him a small water-skin and an ʿanazah (a short spear), and he would cleanse himself with the water.” Reported by al-Bukhari, Sahih, Book of Wudu, chapters “Istinja with water” and “Carrying the ʿanazah together with water for istinja,” 1/68–69, nos. 149–151; and by Muslim, Sahih, Book of Purification, no. 271.
(3) Reported by Ahmad, Musnad 6/137, 219, 227; Ibn Majah, no. 324; al-Bukhari, al-Tarikh al-Kabir 3/156; Ibn al-Mundhir, al-Awsat 1/no. 261; al-Tahawi, Sharh Maʿani al-Athar 4/234; al-Daraqutni, Sunan 1/59–60; al-Bayhaqi, al-Sunan al-Kubra 1/92–93; and others.
The isnad is weak and the text anomalous: ʿArak never heard directly from ʿAishah, as stated in Ibn Abi Hatim’s al-Marasil, no. 606. Al-Bukhari and Abu Hatim al-Razi ruled the report mawquf; see al-Tarikh al-Kabir 3/156 and Ibn Abi Hatim’s ʿIlal 1/29. Al-Bukhari’s wording is: “ʿAishah rejected their claim, ‘Do not face the qiblah.’” See also al-Daraqutni’s ʿIlal 5/93b.
(4) In manuscript H the wording is wa yurwi (“and he relates”). I say: this narration is absent from the printed Musnad because Imam Ahmad told his son ʿAbd Allah to strike it out, saying, “Delete the hadith of Jaʿfar ibn al-Zubayr.” See al-ʿIlal wa Maʿrifat al-Rijal (transmission of ʿAbd Allah ibn Ahmad) 3/206, no. 4887.
