Al-FurūsiyyaIbn al-Qayyim

• He also included the report, “There is no valid fast for the one who does not make the intention for it during the night.” (1)

When al-Maymūnī questioned him about it, he replied, “Let me tell you: in my view that chain has no standing. However, from ʿĀʾisha and Ḥafṣa there are two sound isnāds.” He meant that the report is mawqūf, stopping with those two Companions. (2)

• He likewise related the narration of Abū al-Muṭawwas, from his father, from Abū Hurayra, traced back to the Prophet: “Whoever breaks a single day of Ramadan, a lifetime of fasting will never make it up.” (3)

(1) It was narrated by Ahmad in his Musnad (6/287); Abu Dawud (2454); al-Tirmidhi (726); Ibn Majah (1700); al-Nasai (2331–2335); Ibn Khuzaymah in his Sahih (4/202); al-Tahawi in Sharh Maani al-Athar (2/54); al-Bayhaqi in al-Sunan al-Kubra (4/202), and others. The isnads differ as to whether the report is marfu (attributed to the Prophet) or mawquf (a Companion’s statement). A number of scholars—such as Ibn Khuzaymah, Ibn Hibban, al-Hakim, and Ibn Hazm—authenticated the marfu version. However, the leading hadith critics, including Ahmad, al-Bukhari, al-Nasai, al-Tirmidhi, Abu Dawud, and al-Daraqutni, preferred the mawquf wording, and this is the correct view. For details see: the section on fasting in Ibn Taymiyyah’s Sharh al-Umdah (1/178–182). (2) Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah cites this variant in Sharh al-Umdah, Book of Fasting (1/183). Note: MS Mat reads ghayr (“other than”) instead of indi (“with me”). (3) Reported by Ahmad in the Musnad (2/386, 442, 458, 470); Abu Dawud (2396); al-Tirmidhi (723); Ibn Majah (1672); Ibn Khuzaymah (3/238); Ibn Abi Shaybah (2/347), and others. The hadith is munkar (disclaimed): it is uniquely transmitted by Abu al-Matwas, who is unknown, and the route through Habib ibn Abi Thabit is rife with inconsistencies. Accordingly, it was declared weak by Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Ibn Khuzaymah, Abu Ali al-Tusi, and al-Bayhaqi.
