The objectors said to the one who pronounces it lawful: “We are not the sort who can be cowed by the mere rattling of water-skins (1), nor the kind who turn and run when the point of a spear is leveled at us. By Allah’s grace we are champions of the truth, we gain our victory through it, we gain insight by it (2); with it we argue, to it we refer for judgment. It is the pavilion to which we retreat (3) and the solid ground on which we rely. We declare our disavowal before Allah of everything else, and we seek refuge in Him from lending support to anything but the truth. We are not among those who recognize truth through men; rather, we recognize men through the truth. Nor are we of those who subject the truth

al-Khattab delivered a sermon at Jabiyah. Some narrators cite the sermon in full, others in abridged form. This is one of the points at which Muhammad ibn Suqah—despite being reliable, pious and devout—erred. The correct, well-trodden isnad is the one followed by Yazid ibn Abd Allah ibn al-Had, who related it from Abd Allah ibn Dinar, from al-Zuhri, as a statement of ʿUmar. Al-Bukhari recorded this version in al-Tarikh al-Kabir (1/102) and al-Tarikh al-Awsat (1/229). That is the sound version, and the mursal chain was preferred by al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim, Abu Zurʿah al-Razi, and al-Daraqutni. See al-Tarikh al-Kabir (1/102), al-Awsat (1/229–30), Ibn Abi Hatim, ʿIlal (2/146, 371), and al-Daraqutni, ʿIlal (2/65–68). Notes: 1 – The hadith also comes from ʿUmar through several other routes, all of which revolve around Abd al-Malik ibn ʿUmayr; he reported it in seven mutually conflicting forms. See al-Daraqutni, ʿIlal. 2 – The Ẓ manuscript reads maʿ al-ithnayn (“with the two”) instead of min al-ithnayn (“from the two”). (1) The Ẓ manuscript has lana, whereas the Ḥ manuscript reads lahu bi-lisan. (2) The clause “wa-fihi mutabasirun” appears only in Ẓ. (3) The Ẓ manuscript reads narjiʿ, while Ḥ has fazaʿ.
