from you; just as we have a stronger claim to the imams than you in this issue. If you come at us with a multitude of proofs, we will counter you with a multitude of imams—and, in truth, a single proof from those we have already cited is enough for us to prevail over you.
They continue: “Here is the great majority of the ummah who have judged this view to be sound, and the hadith says: ‘Whatever the Muslims deem good is good in the sight of Allah.’ (1)
Anything else is an eccentric opinion, and whoever departs from the majority, Allah will let him stray. The Prophet ﷺ also said: ‘Satan is with the lone individual, and he is farther away from two.’ (2)”
(1) It is narrated by Ahmad in the Musnad (1/379, no. 3600); al-Tabarani in al-Muʿjam al-Kabir (9/18, no. 8582); al-Bazzar in his Musnad (al-Bahr al-Zakhar) (5/212, no. 1816); and others, as a mawquf report from Ibn Masud. The isnad runs through Abu Bakr ibn Ayyash and Ibn Uyaynah, from Asim, from Zirr, from Ibn Masud, also mawquf. Its chain is sound, though the report shows many variations. See al-Daraqutni, ʿIlal (5/66–67). Al-Bayhaqi commented: “The version of Ibn Ayyash is closer to the mark.” See Nasb al-Rayah (4/133). The present author declared the narration sahih in its mawquf form (p. 238), and Ibn Hajar graded it hasan; see Muwafaqat al-Khabr al-Khabr (2/435). Note: In the Ẓ manuscript the words from “wa-fi al-hadith” (“and in the hadith”) up to “hasanan” (“good”) are absent.
(2) Al-Tirmidhi records a lengthy version (2165); Ibn Majah an abridged one (363); Ahmad in the Musnad (1/18, no. 114); Ibn Abi Asim in al-Sunnah (88 and 897); al-Tahawi in Sharh Maʿani al-Athar (4/150) in abridged form; and others. The chain goes through Muhammad ibn Suqah, from Abd Allah ibn Dinar, from Ibn Umar, that ʿUmar ibn
