one of the two stake-givers, the muhallil following him and the other stake-giver finishing last, the winner keeps his own stake. As for the third man’s stake, there are four opinions (1):

1. Its owner reclaims it, even though he was defeated on every count; this, they say, is the muhallil’s blessing upon him.
2. It belongs exclusively to the winner, because he outran and overcame him.
3. It is shared between the winner and the muhallil, since both of them finished ahead of him.
4. The muhallil alone receives it, for he entered the race solely to make the betting lawful for himself, not for the other two.

If, however, the muhallil wins, one of the stake-givers comes in second, and the third participant is last, there are three opinions (2):

1. Both stakes go to the muhallil.
2. The third man’s stake is divided equally between the muhallil and the runner-up.
3. The third man’s stake goes exclusively to the runner-up.

And if one of the stake-givers wins, the other follows him, and the muhallil arrives third, the winner secures his own stake. Does he also deserve the second man’s stake (3)? There are two opinions, both contingent upon the foregoing.
