Al-FurūsiyyaIbn al-Qayyim

—he said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘I have been sent with the sword ahead of the Final Hour so that Allah alone is worshiped with no partner beside Him. My provision has been placed beneath the shade of my spear, and humiliation and abasement are set upon all who oppose my command. Whoever imitates a people is counted among them.’

And in Sunan Ibn Majah (1), on the authority of ʿAli ibn Abi Talib, he said, ‘There was in my hand…’”

and in Tahdhib al-Kamal (6/47). Ibn ʿAdi, al-Busayri and others declared the report weak; see al-Silsila al-Daʿifa 9/480. * Al-Awzaʿi also transmitted the hadith, mursal, from Saʿid b. Jubala, from Tawus. It is recorded by Ibn al-Mubarak, Kitab al-Jihad, no. 105; Ibn Abi Shayba, 4/222, no. 19430; and others. A wording is likewise related from al-Awzaʿi through Hassan → Abu al-Munib → Ibn ʿUmar, but that is a mistake and cannot be soundly traced back to al-Awzaʿi; his reliable version is the previous mursal transmission from Tawus. The hadith has also been reported from Anas—an outright fabrication; from Abu Hurayra—baseless; and from Hudhayfa—defective because it is mawquf, with the wording: “Whoever imitates a people is one of them”; as well as through other chains. A number of scholars nevertheless judged the report authentic, among them Ibn Taymiyya, al-ʿIraqi, and Ibn Hajar. See Fath al-Bari 6/98; al-Irwaʾ 5/109–111; Dhamm al-Kalam 2/392–394 (editor’s notes). (1) It is likewise found in Ahmad, no. 2810; al-Tayalisi, Musnad 1/no. 149; Ibn ʿAdi, al-Kamil 4/173; and elsewhere in an expanded wording that adds a passage on the merit of turbans. The chain runs: Ashʿath b. Saʿid (Abu al-Rabiʿ al-Samman) and ʿAbd al-Salam b. Hashim → ʿAbd Allah b. Busr al-Saksaki → Abu Rashid → ʿAli. This version is extremely weak: Abu al-Rabiʿ al-Samman is very weak; ʿAbd al-Salam b. Hashim is a liar; ʿAbd Allah b. Busr al-Saksaki is weak. Ibn ʿAdi even listed the report among the rejected narrations of ʿAbd Allah b. Busr. See Tahdhib al-Kamal 3/261–264; 14/335–336; and al-Jarh
