closing in on him, allowing you to strike from a distance. Experience has shown that a single archer, if he is a skilled marksman, can rout an entire party that has no archer among them and drive them all away. For this reason, military strategists (1) say, “Every arrow is the equal of one man.” Thus, if an archer carries a hundred arrows (2), he is reckoned the equivalent of a hundred men. The adversary fears arrows many times more than he fears the sword or the spear. Should a lone foot-soldier be an archer, he can take on a hundred horsemen who have no archer among them and defeat them, whereas a hundred horsemen cannot overpower a single archer. Accordingly, Allah has cast into hearts a terror of the bowman: the mere rattle of arrows in his quiver inspires more dread than the sword or the spear. This is confirmed by observation—indeed, a thousand men may panic before one archer, yet they would hardly be alarmed by a solitary swordsman. The shout of a proficient archer (3) in the ranks is better than an entire detachment, just as the Prophet ﷺ said: “The voice of Abū Ṭalḥah in the army is better than a troop.” (4)

(1) In MSS Z and Ḥ the reading is “al-harb” (war). (2) Not found in MS Maṭ. (3) MS Z reads “al-jayyid” (the excellent). (4) Reported by Ahmad 3:111, 112, 261; al-Humaydi, Musnad 2, no. 1202 (in an expanded form); Abu Ya‘la, Musnad 7, no. 3983; al-Qurab, Fi Fadl al-Ramy, nos. 32–34; and others, through various chains from Ibn ‘Uyaynah, from ‘Ali b. Zayd b. Jud‘an, from Anas b. Malik. Some narrators have “miʾah” (one hundred) in place of “fiʾah” (company). Ḥammad b. Salamah also transmitted it, but with inconsistency: ‘Affan related it from him in the same wording, adding, “I think it is from Anas.” * It was likewise transmitted by Yazid b. Harun, though the reports from him differ: he narrated it from Ḥammad, from Thabit, from Anas =
