(1) Manuscript H omits the phrase “kana lahu nuran” (“it became a light for him”). Tenth: that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. (2) Reported by Ibn Abi Asim, al-Sunnah, no. 1408 (with the same wording); al-Tirmidhi, no. 3751 (abridged); Ibn Shahin, Sharh Madhahib Ahl al-Sunnah, no. 162; Ibn Hibban, 15/no. 6990; al-Hakim, 3/499, no. 6118; and others, through the chain: Jaʿfar b. ʿAwn – Ismail b. Abi Khalid – Qays b. Abi Hazim – Saʿd. Jaʿfar b. ʿAwn erred here; the correct version is mursal, as pointed out by al-Tirmidhi and al-Daraqutni. Yahya al-Qattan, Yazid b. Harun, Wakiʿ, Sufyan b. ʿUyaynah, Hishim, Abu Usamah and others all transmit it from Ismail in the mursal form. Jaʿfar himself was inconsistent: some narrators relate it from him as musnad, others as mursal; see Daraqutni, al-Ilal, 4/no. 640. The same wording is also attributed to ʿAishah in Musnad al-Bazzar, 4/no. 1213, but that isnad is spurious because it contains ʿUthman al-Waqasi, who is discarded (matruk). Note: edition MT reads “ramyihi” instead of “ramyitihi”. (3) Al-Bukhari, no. 3829, provides this wording; Muslim, no. 2412, cites the hadith without giving its wording.
