And in Sunan Abu Dawud and other collections there is a hadith traced back to the Prophet: “Whoever wears a bow-string around his neck—Muhammad is free of him.” (1)
(1) Abu Dawud, no. 36; Ahmad, Musnad 4:109, no. 17000; Ibn Abd al-Hakam, Futuh Misr, p. 186; Ibn Abi Asim, al-Ahad wal-Mathani 4: no. 2196; and others.
The isnad runs through al-Mufaddal ibn Fadala and Abd Allah ibn Ayyash al-Qutbani, both from Ayyash ibn Abbas al-Qutbani, who reported that Shuyaym ibn Baytan told him he had heard Shayban ibn Umayya al-Qutbani narrate it from Ruwayfi‘ in an extended form.
Haywa ibn Shurayh and Ibn Lahi‘a also transmitted it (with some variation) from Ayyash, from Shuyaym, who said he heard it from Ruwayfi‘.
That version is found in Ahmad 4: no. 16995, al-Nasai, no. 5067, and al-Tahawi, Sharh Maani al-Athar 1:123.
I say: the first chain is sounder. It includes Shayban ibn Umayya al-Qutbani, a tabi‘i who heard directly from Ruwayfi‘ and took part with him in the conquests; no one declared him reliable except Ibn Hibban, and Ibn Hajar states in al-Taqrib, no. 2832: “unknown.”
Ibn Lahi‘a and al-Mufaddal ibn Fadala also reported it from Ayyash, from Shuyaym, from Abu Salim al-Jayshani, who said he heard Abd Allah ibn Amr mention this hadith while he was on ribat at the fortress of Bab Alyun.
This wording is recorded by Ahmad 4:108, no. 16994; Abu Dawud, no. 37; and Ibn Abd al-Hakam, Futuh Misr, p. 186.
I am uncertain whether Ayyash al-Qutbani preserved it accurately; if he did, it serves as a corroborating chain for what preceded. This isnad includes Abu Salim al-Jayshani—his personal name is Sufyan ibn Hani— a tabi‘i rated trustworthy by al-Ijli, although his status as a Companion is disputed. See al-Tarikh al-Kabir 4:87 and Tahdhib al-Kamal 11:199–200.
