Al-FurūsiyyaIbn al-Qayyim

He reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, “Tether the horses, wipe their forelocks and hindquarters, put neck-cords on them, but do not hang bowstrings on them.”

There are two explanations for this:

  1. That one must not ride the horse while a bowstring is hung on it in pursuit of the awtār of the Age of Ignorance—that is, the blood-feuds (1) and inter-tribal hostilities (2).

  2. The sounder view: that he forbade hanging a bowstring on the animal as a charm against the evil eye, as the people of pre-Islamic times used to do. In the same way, one may not suspend on it a bead, a bone, or an amulet, for all of that is from the practices of the Age of Ignorance (3).

See Ibn Abi Hatim, al-ʿIlal, 2:312–13, no. 2451, for a detailed treatment. Note: MSS H and Z omit the words “wa qalliduha” (“and hang it on them”). (1) al-dhahl: the pursuit of retaliation for a wrong done to you, or for an act of enmity committed against you; see al-ʿAyn by Khalil ibn Ahmad, p. 315. (2) This view was espoused by al-Nadr ibn Shumayl and favored by Wakiʿ ibn al-Jarrah; al-Thawri regarded it as weak, and al-Qurtubi commented, “It is a remote interpretation.” Note: MS H reads “min al-qabaʾil” (“from the tribes”) in place of “bayna al-qabaʾil” (“between the tribes”). (3) It is likewise the position of Imam Malik; see the Muwattaʾ (Yahya al-Laythi’s recension), 2:526. Supporting it is the hadith of Abu Bishr al-Ansari: while on a journey with the Messenger of Allah, the Prophet dispatched a herald proclaiming, “No camel is to be left with a necklace of sinew—or any necklace—around its neck except that it be cut off.” Reported by al-Bukhari, no. 2843, and Muslim, no. 2115. Note: The word “ahl” is omitted in MSS H and M.
