and the report remains mursal (disconnected). A comparable mursal version also comes through another route, from Naim ibn Abi Hind al-Ashja‘i, and contains the wording: “Gabriel reproached me concerning the horse.” It is recorded by al-Tayalisi in his Musnad (2/1155), by Abu Dawud in al-Marasil, no. 291, and by others. Some transmitters furnished a continuous chain and attributed it to Urwah ibn al-Ja‘d al-Bariqi, but this cannot be established. (1) Absent from the H and Maṭ manuscripts. (2) Cited in 6/223; also in Ahmad, Musnad 5/170; al-Bazzar, al-Bahr al-Zakhar 9/3893; Abu Nu‘aym, al-Hilya 8/387; and al-Hakim 2/92, 144 (nos. 2457, 2638), all through the isnad of Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja‘far → Yazid ibn Abi Habib → Suwayd ibn Qays → Muawiyah ibn Khudayj → Abu Dharr. Abd al-Hamid’s version, however, is contradicted both in chain and in wording. Amr ibn al-Harith and Layth ibn Sa‘d transmit it from Yazid → Abd al-Rahman ibn Shamasah al-Mahri → Muawiyah → Abu Dharr as a mawquf report. This variant is found in Ahmad (5/162), Sa‘id ibn Mansur (2/2444), and Ibn Abd al-Hakam, Futuh Misr, p. 100. The mawquf version is the authentic one and its chain is sound; al-Daraqutni said, “This is the preserved form.” See al-Ilal 6/1123.
