the oaths of archers:
Yusuf b. Ya‘qub b. ‘Abd al-‘Aziz al-Thaqafi al-Basri, while in Egypt, narrated to us; he said: My father related to me, Sufyan b. ‘Uyaynah narrated to us, from Bahz b. Hakim, from his father, from his grandfather, who said: The Prophet ﷺ passed by some archers who were shooting, accompanied by Abu Bakr and ‘Umar. One of the archers declared, “By Allah, I hit the mark,” although he had missed. Abu Bakr exclaimed, “He has broken his oath, O Messenger of Allah!” The Prophet replied, “No. An archer’s oath is idle speech; it entails neither perjury nor expiation.” (1)
Zakariyya b. Yahya al-Saji narrated to us: Ahmad b. ‘Uthman b. Hakim al-Awdi told us; Bakr b. (2) Yunus b. Bukayr told us; al-Layth b. Sa‘d, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, reported: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ passed by a group competing with arrows and swearing, “By Allah, I have hit!” He said, “Shoot, and no sin is upon you.” (3)
I say: The reliability of Ya‘qub b. ‘Abd al-‘Aziz in the first chain, and of Bakr b. Yunus (4) in the second, needs examination; and if the two reports are authentic, they (5) would not conflict with any established principle.
